Diego Maradona, who led Napoli to their only two Scudetto wins, passed away last year on November 25th

Serie A side S.S.C. Napoli FC have unveiled a special Jersey that they will be wearing throughout the month of November to commemorate the life of legendary Argentine footballer Diego Armando Maradona. The former Napoli midfielder laid down his life last year on 25th November aged 60, after being under medical assistance in his house for over a year due to a heart ailment. This announcement by Napoli comes three weeks ahead of his first Death Anniversary.

Diego Maradona’s prolific record at Napoli

Diego Maradona with the Scudetto

‘El Diego’ was hands down the best player to ever don the jersey of Napoli. He played for them for a rather short span of 7 years but the many records that he broke during that period, are untouched till date. Maradona made 188 appearances for Napoli and became their all-time leading goal-scorer with 115 goals. That record was ultimately broken by Marek Hamsik in 2017 and then by Dries Mertens in 2019.

Diego Maradona was treated almost like a god at Naples because of the way in which he led the team to their only two Serie A title wins – in 1987 and 1990. To this day, Napoli have not won any more Scudettos.

After Diego’s departure from the club, his jersey number. i.e the number 10, was retired by the club in the year 2000. Napoli have always had a special attachment towards Diego Maradona and to this date, they never leave a chance to show their affection towards their legend. For example, right after Diego Maradona’s unfortunate demise last year, the club officially renamed their home stadium, i.e, Stadio San Paolo, as the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium. This year again, they have come up with this unique jersey.

The jersey will be available in 3 different colours and a bulk of the proceeds will go to charities on behalf of the club.

They will wear the jersey in all their matches that are set to be played in the month of November – Verona (Sunday, November 7), Inter (November 21) and Lazio (November 28).
